An interesting debate...

  1. Hi Lisa,

Just looking at your subject title, I immediatley had to comment. I've read the book on teaching approaches by Harmer and I believe the debate really isn't about the teaching methods we use but the approaches we implement. I also wrote a (an unpublished) paper on it 2 years ago where I argued that although methods are wide and varied in ESL teaching and learning, the communicative approach (which is not a method) is one that really does engage in constant target language use as well as maximum student participation. However, I believe the way forward in ESL teaching and learning is using a blended apporach, possibly the PPP, task-based and communicative all in one and implemented in part through technology.

  2. I think Scott Thornbury is great. His videos and thoughts about Dogme teaching have influenced my teaching. Less with more!
How much input do we as teachers provide to help learners achieve authentic, personalized output. Do learners need to identify with the input to make progress?
    Your thoughts?
